The Edinburgh Paving & Landscaping Company
Who we are...
We’re Lisa and Colin, the husband-and-wife team behind The Edinburgh Paving & Landscaping Company. Between us, we bring two very different skill sets to every project. I'm the garden designer and usually the first person you'll meet. Colin leads our construction team and has spent decades building landscapes throughout Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians.
Before retraining in garden design, I spent years working within the landscaping materials industry (where I met Colin!) before becoming immersed in our own landscaping business. That means I don't just design gardens that look beautiful on paper - I understand exactly what it takes to build them. And often every detail over the dinner table!
Every line on a drawing has a consequence.
A wider step.
A retaining wall.
A change of paving.
Moving a level by just a few hundred millimetres.
To most people they're simply ideas. To me, they're also excavation, drainage, labour, materials and budget. Understanding both design and construction means I can help clients decide where their investment will have the greatest impact. Sometimes that's encouraging someone to spend a little more because it'll completely transform the space. Other times it's talking them out of spending money on something that simply won't make enough difference to justify the cost.
If there's one thing you'll learn about me, it's that I'm not interested in adding features for the sake of it. Everything has to earn its place.
Most people don't know what they want... and that's perfectly okay.
People often apologise when we first meet because they "haven't got any ideas."
The truth is, almost every client tells me exactly the same thing.
"We just can't picture it."
That's why every design is presented with detailed 3D SketchUp visualisations. Seeing your future garden is very different from trying to imagine it from a flat plan, and once clients can virtually walk through the space, everything suddenly clicks.
One of my favourite moments is presenting a design for the first time.
There's often a pause...
...followed by,
"I'd never have thought of that."
That's usually when I know we've unlocked something special together.
The best projects are always collaborative.
Some clients arrive with Pinterest boards, magazine cuttings and a clear vision.
Others simply know their garden isn't working.
Both approaches are absolutely fine.
The projects I enjoy most are those where clients arrive with an open mind and lean into our experience and trust us to guide the process. That doesn't mean they lose control. Quite the opposite.
We spend time understanding how you live, how you entertain, where the evening sun falls, what catches your eye and what budget feels comfortable. Then we start introducing ideas, materials and possibilities you may never have considered.
I don't believe people employ a designer to be told what they already know.
The finished garden should feel unmistakably yours - but hopefully a better version than you imagined when we first met.
We design spaces to be lived in.
Whether we're creating a contemporary driveway that transforms the approach to your home or reimagining an entire back garden, our philosophy is exactly the same.
We look at the property as a whole. The work we create should enhance your home and bring you out into it. I'm often told that I've created a series of rooms within a garden and that's exactly what I hope to achieve.
Every material choice, tree, planting decision, level change and structural feature should feel like it belongs together rather than looking as though it has been added over time.
If you've looked through our portfolio, you'll probably notice we have a soft spot for bold architectural features softened by naturalistic planting. We love creating gardens where structure and softness work together - spaces that feel calm, immersive and beautiful throughout the seasons.
We don't really have a "house style", because every client is different.
But we do hope every finished project feels timeless, thoughtful and completely at home in its surroundings as well as having the potential to be well used and loved.
Then Colin and the team bring it to life.
Design is only half the story.
Colin personally oversees our construction projects, leading our employed landscaping team from the first excavation through to the final planting.
They're a close-knit team who genuinely care about doing things properly.
Many of our reviews mention how friendly, polite, hardworking and tidy they are - Colin's hose is very precious to him I'm just as proud of those comments as I am of compliments about the finished gardens.
Because creating a garden should be an enjoyable experience - not something you simply endure until the last slab is laid.
Why we love egg.
We've been fortunate enough to design and build gardens for many fellow egg members over the years. And they're always the loveliest bunch of ladies, and genuinely are some of our fondest garden projects.
Much of our work comes through recommendations, and you'll find lots of lovely feedback about us within the egg Facebook group, as well as on Google and Edinburgh Trusted Trader.
For a family business, there really isn't a greater compliment than someone recommending us to their friends.
Finally...
A garden is never just somewhere to lay paving or plant a border.
It's where birthday drinks turn into long summer evenings.
Where children build dens.
Where dogs find their favourite sunny spot.
Where you drink your first coffee of the day.
Where friends stay longer than they planned.
Or simply where you escape for ten quiet minutes after a busy week.
If we can create a space that becomes the backdrop to those moments, we've done our job.
We'd love to help you create yours.
